4 facts about ISRO you probably didn’t knowIndia is known for many things around the globe. Such as its manufacturing, history, cricket and cuisine, but you don’t think of India as a space nation. India has been running a successful space programme for over 46 years now. Here are deVere India’s top 4 facts about ISRO that you probably didn’t know!
ISRO was formed in 1969IRSO was formed on independence day 1969 by Dr Vikram Sarabhai. Dr Sarabhai is hailed as the father of India’s space programme as without him, the ISRO would not have been formed. He set up the space programme to help humanity in fighting issues we all face together, such as climate change and looking for another world to call home.
ISRO is cheaper than NASA, much cheaperISRO’s total expenditure over the last 40 years is HALF as much as NASA’s single year budget!! Thanks to building every single component of the Indian rockets and satellites in India without outside help, has kept the costs to a minimum. Also the cost of manufacturing is a lot lower in India too. However, with a lack of outside cooperation and help from the two big players in the space game, Russia and the USA, India was the first country to land a probe on Mars in the first attempt! The USA failed their first 5 attempts and Russia their first 8. Just goes to show, no matter how much, or how little you spend, it’s the quality of the work that gets the job done!
ISRO developed India’s version of Google Earth, BhuvanBhuvan is a 3D, web based satellite imagery tool which is the Indian equivalent of Google Earth. Bhuvan allows you to view a detailed map of India, with all the roads and major towns and cities marked clearly. However, Bhuvan does have a few drawbacks. It’s incredibly basic and the image quality when you start to zoom in is very poor. Considering it was built without help from any other country or technology, Bhuvan is a testament to how hard the ISRO work and how far they are taking India in the world of space exploration.
You can buy satellite data!Ever wanted to get your hands on data from satellites without hacking NASA? ISRO actually allow you to buy all sorts of data from them online. You can order prints of your favourite cities, towns, villages and roads from the IRSO website. In fact, you can request satellite images of just about anything in India. You can even log in and view real time satellite imagery! Now Google doesn’t let you do that.
